Please IT departments: be less violent with your end users. User training is not the only way to secure a healthy mitigation. User shaming is NOT the WAY. Account management, policies, and security tools will help but blaming the user because they "clicked that link" is bogus. The advice I had to give very recently: do your job. OK, rant over. #infosec #ITDepartments #cybersecurity #doyourjob
Tech Bro Hypocrisy #451: Consent
“If you make something freely available on the web, we can take it and do whatever we like with it.”
– Oh, so I can just take your company’s logo and the copy from your site and use it? Download your app and redistribute it?…
“No, those are protected by trademarks, copyright, and licenses.”

I don't want you to follow me! I'm not leading you anywhere!
I don't want to follow you! I'm not looking for a guide!
I want to share topical spaces with you. I want to collaborate and converse with you.
Conceptually, these ideas are miles apart in my mind. It flavors every interaction we have On Here and shines a light on how little work we put into community building in favor of working on (ostensibly) community tool building.
the thing i'm liking least about masto so far is the moral superiority people here seem to crave. nasty drivebys about you not doing something right enough in social media or life. fuck. right. off.
Ruby is so confusing lmao
Many of the arguments made back in 2021 around management liability for ‘harmful content’ that users post is still relevant. #onlinesafetybill https://www.openrightsgroup.org/blog/online-abuse-why-management-liability-isnt-the-answer/
One of the perils of having your_real_name at gmail.com as your primary email address, is getting a ton of stuff for people who for some reason think that's their email address.
There are at least three people out there who have persistently told mailing lists, e-commerce sites, utility providers, car dealerships, and their entire extended families that their email address is mine, for years.
How can you not know your gmail address, if you have the login creds? I just
Programming help pet peeve: people refusing to provide the full code when asking a room of volunteers to help fix their bug, incompletely and inaccurately transcribing it instead (and usually omitting the cause of the bug in the process).
Like, I'm not going to waste a bunch of time and energy on playing 20 questions with you, just to satisfy your manager's weird obsession with Proprietary Company Information(tm)?
#HTML trivia!
<html>, <head>, and <body> are optional in the HTML5 spec.
<table> is valid and good and you absolutely should use it when appropriate (just not for page layout)
<b> and <i> are not deprecated and still have valid semantic use (although in a lot of cases, <strong> and <em> are what you want)
<marquee> is deprecated, but still supported in every major browser
climate catastrophes are probably irreversible. we can still reduce their intensity.
but do you know what's the secret, the one weird truth capitalists don't want to know?
you never feel more alive as when you're doing something meaningful with your life. we lost many battles, yes. but being in the fight is a lot more satisfying than being in the grind, living to work and consume.
Somehow I wound up with a job where I get paid to read angry emails from people incorrectly placing blame for bizarre errors on our product, and then write extremely polite but brutally specific refutations that describe in excruciating detail, with annotated screenshots, exactly how they're shooting *themselves* in the foot.
how did i get so lucky 😭
Dear journalists (and everyone):
You would never call someone's blog their WordPress, despite the fact that the vast majority of blogs use that platform. You'd call it a blog.
So please don't call someone's newsletter a Substack. You're advertising for the company when you do.
I expect Substack users to advertise the name, of course. But since there are other newsletter products, I hope the rest of us will use the correct, neutral word.
